GEORGIA OPAL “ZULA” WEST

Georgia Opal West was born to William Edmund Burrow and Lizzie Cole Burrow on April 24, 1920 in Pershing, OK. She died February 3rd 2012 in Tulsa, OK.

The nickname “Zula” was given by her uncle Houston Burrow and was adopted by the family after his death when she was a toddler. Georgia graduated from Bartlesville High School in 1938. She married Norvel Clifton West April 19, 1942 in the New Hope, OK community. After Norvel returned from serving in Europe during WWII, they settled on a farm in the Long, OK community where they lived until Norvel’s death in 1989. Later she moved to Tulsa, OK, but she continued to enjoy time at the farm as long as her health permitted.

Georgia was devoted to her family and loved gardening, flowers, bird watching, cooking, reading and travel. She had the heart of a caregiver long before she studied nursing at Westark Junior College at the age of 50, then worked as an LPN at Sparks Regional Medical Center in Ft. Smith, AR until her retirement in 1984.

Georgia was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one daughter, Elizabeth West Speidel, a son-in-law, Richard Speidel and three brothers, Grover Burrow, Leonard Burrow and Houston Burrow. She is survived by one daughter Norvella Woods and husband Grover of Tulsa, OK, one son Norman West and wife Susan of Fairbank, IA, three grandsons, Bradley Woods of Boulder, CO, Jason Woods of Longmont, CO and Matthew Woods and wife Janell of Tulsa, OK. She is also survived by a grandson by marriage Scott Speidel and wife Kathleen Quinn of Evanston, IL, a granddaughter by marriage RaeAnn Cononi and husband Paul of Mashpee, MA, and by great-grandchildren Anjali and Akash Woods, Dalton and Channing Baumann, Griffin Woods, Reeve Cononi, and Connor and Nancy Speidel. Also surviving are two sisters, Fannie Floyd of Pawhuska, OK, Ruby Walker of Dubach, LA; a brother-in-law, Elzey West and wife Ruby of Muldrow, OK, a sister-in-law, Lorraine West of Las Cruces, NM and numerous relatives and friends.

Services will be 10:00 A.M., Monday, February 13 at Mallory-Martin Chapel in Sallisaw, with Reverend Wayne Efurd officiating. Burial will follow in Akins Cemetery under the direction of Mallory-Martin Funeral Home in Sallisaw. Viewing will be 8:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M., Saturday and 12:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Norvella, I am so sorry to hear about your Mother passing, I wish I had heard earlier as I would have been at the services. God Bless each of you and I will try to get in touch with you the next time I am in your area. I have a picture of Zula with my
Mother and Moms sisters and GrandPa Burrow. I have very fond memories of being at your parents home when we were all young... Love/Elaine

Norman and Susan - we are sad to hear of Mom's passing, she was such an exceptional person! We are donating to Hesed House, a homeless shelter in Aurora, in her name. Liz and I did volunteer work there many years ago and I have helped out in their soup
kitchen most recently. I think Georgia and Liz would both approve. Love to you both, Leslie

My deepest sympathies go out to the West family in this time of loss and sorrow. Georgia was such a gracious and loving person. I shall always cherish my trip to Oklahoma with Norm and Sue, meeting Norvel, Georgia and the rest of the West clan. I shall
also never forget running with the boys, whether it was in Leigh Creek or skiing the slopes of Breckenridge. The West family has afforded me many marvelous memories from my childhood. I would like to thank you for raising such and amazing son, one who cares
for all others. Norm has a heart of gold, just like you. He has been an incredible role model in my life, and for him, I am internally grateful to you Georgia. You have a great legacy in this family.
